kinks - Afternoon Tea (Something Else by the Kinks)

Tea time won't be the same without my Donna
At night I lie awake and dream of Donna
I think about that small cafe
That's where we used to meet each day
And then we used to sit a while
And drink our afternoon tea

I'll take afternoon tea (afternoon tea)
If you take it with me (afternoon tea)
You take as long as you like
'Cause I like you, girl

I take sugar with tea (afternoon tea)
You take milk if you please (afternoon tea)
Like you talking to me
Because you ease my mind

Ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba (afternoon tea)
Ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba (afternoon tea)
Ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba (afternoon tea)
Ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba (afternoon tea)

Tea time still ain't the same without my Donna
At night I lie awake and dream of Donna
I went to our cafe one day
They said that Donna walked away
You'd think at least she might have stayed
To drink her afternoon tea

I'll take afternoon tea (afternoon tea)
If you take it with me (afternoon tea)
You take as long as you like
'Cause I like you, girl

I take afternoon tea (afternoon tea)
Every day of the week (afternoon tea)
Please come along if you like
Because I like you, girl

Ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba (afternoon tea)
Ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba (afternoon tea)

This song is so beautiful in capturing the sweet sadness of remembering our young and innocent days. Ray Davies is an incomparably brilliant and sensitive songwriter, and I believe Arthur is the Kinks' finest album. I feel the Kinks are second only to the Beatles in the stunning beauty and diversity of their music. Ray Davies is the finest songwriter of all, the most literate, creative, and the most brilliant at capturing all the emotions that make up a human life. God save the Kinks!

thats so cute to say that about this song. it just shows how incredible the kinks were and how so many great songs they did. Ray must be in the top 5 greatest songwriters of the English invasion. the amount of product they produced welll into the 70's is amazing. i had he great honor..in 74 of sneeking through a backdoor, into their sound check in santa monica..and sat on stage for 2 hrs as they did a whole set....it was the best bad thing i ever did. after lola,....i wasnt a fan..burned out.

I bought this album when it first came out. I think it was 1969 or 1970. I remember The Who got all the attention with their "rock opera" Tommy. But this album... there was always something special about it. And it WAS my young and innocent days back then. I found the CD not long ago at a flea market and bought it. I hadn't heard these songs in 30 years. When this song came on, I must admit, the tears welled up. I'm 60 now. And I'm so glad I had Ray & The Kinks to help me make the journey!

I'm so glad to read the approving comments here about this song. For more than 30 years this song has sent shivers down my spine with its unembarrassed beauty and delicacy. And yet nobody I knew shared my sentiments about it. Even my sister was dismissive of it. Now at last I see others appreciate exquisite and sensitive, emotion-filled fine art, and I thank God for you all and for the Kinks. This is more wistful than "Some Mother's son", but just as moving.
